The reason for having the two categories of public
art and international sculpture is because the approaches
to the photographs have been rather different.

In the Kaartinkaupunki district of Helsinki, the statue and
fountain known as the Havis Amanda is actually called
Merenneito (The Mermaid) and is by the French Art Nouveau
sculptor Ville Vallgren. She is intended to symbolise the emergence
of Helsinki from the water and is supported by spitting seals
and fish. Sculpted in bronze on top of a granite bowl in 1906
she was put in place in the Market Place at night in 1908.
For some time she was pretty controversial, but has been
a major figure for visitors for much longer
