Gazetteers

These photographs are interesting to take in a different
way, for the need is to explore the reasons for why a
feature is to be included in a list or gazetteer and to
record key features. Getting too clever about how
the photograph is taken can be counter-productive
and mask the reason the photograph is needed

The Hermitage on Elizabeth Castle, Jersey

Elizabeth Castle, Jersey, in common with most military sites,
has a long and complex history. In this photograph can be seen
the earliest and arguably one of the most recent elements of
the history. The Hermitage was the earliest inhabited part of
the site, dating at least back to AD555, with a twelfth century
chapel incorporated into it. On the breakwater lies the most
southerly of the German mass concrete structures on the Castle
site, a blockhouse with views to the St Helier harbour minefield
and controls for detonation of mines
